Sets out our approach to promoting positive behaviour and supporting learners who may need additional guidance.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n

1. Ethos and Approach<\/h3>\r\n

At The Ark Specialist College, we believe that all behaviour is a form of communication. We take a trauma-informed, person-centred approach to behaviour support, recognising that many of our learners have experienced difficulty, adversity or change in their lives. Our goal is to create a safe, predictable and supportive environment where learners can thrive.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

2. Positive Behaviour Support<\/h3>\r\n

We use Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) principles across the college. This means we focus on understanding the underlying needs and triggers for behaviour, teaching alternative skills, and adapting the environment to reduce stress and promote success. Every learner has an individual behaviour support plan where needed, developed in partnership with the learner and their family.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

3. Expectations and Rules<\/h3>\r\n

Our college expectations are simple, clear and positively framed:<\/p>\r\n

  • Be safe<\/strong> \u2014 we look after ourselves and each other<\/li>\r\n
  • Be kind<\/strong> \u2014 we treat everyone with respect<\/li>\r\n
  • Be your best<\/strong> \u2014 we support each other to learn and grow<\/li>\r\n <\/ul>\r\n

    These expectations are displayed in accessible formats throughout the college and are revisited regularly with learners.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

    4. De-escalation and Crisis Support<\/h3>\r\n

    All staff are trained in de-escalation techniques and in understanding the signs of distress. When a learner is struggling, we respond calmly and with empathy. Where physical intervention is needed to prevent serious harm, it is used only as a last resort and in line with our physical intervention policy. All such incidents are recorded, reviewed and shared with families.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

    5. Recording and Review<\/h3>\r\n

    Behaviour incidents are recorded in a secure system and reviewed regularly to identify patterns and inform support planning. We use this data to continuously improve our practice and to ensure that every learner receives the right support at the right time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

    6. Family Partnership<\/h3>\r\n

    We work closely with families to ensure that behaviour support is consistent between home and college.
